It's over. We have won this day, we are one step closer to breaking the back of the Yankees.
Our previous estimation was off, closer to five hundred troops and 25 cannon in the first group, countless more in the rest.
We lost a few good men over this past week. Four dead, seven wounded.
There are 21 total men we captured, three of them officers.
Let me start from the beginning of the battle...
We all knew they were advancing and were in our positions waiting for their arrival. First came the cannon fire. They hit us from a distance. That's when we lost Johnson. Poor fellow took a chunk of shrapnel to the head and it splattered his brains upon the floor and wall behind him. Up til then we had never lost a man.
We did catch a break though. They marched in during the bombardment and one of ours opend fire on a squad of them with an LMG. Wiped them out. He kept up the fire, but the rest of them scattered like roaches. More of them stepped on land mines, others got killed by fire or hot lead.
They came in waves and after the first one it looked like a meat grinder. Bodies and what was left of bodies strewn everywhere. Luckily, none of them ours. The mines certainly worked like a charm.
Most of the first wave was slaughtered, the few who weren't managed to flee. We back-shot everal more then.
I had positioned most of our men who had RPGs so that they would be protected from the assault and able to get within range of the cannonade and knock them out. Some time in the second human wave they did. Most of their cannon were blown all to hell, but a few were usable and were promptly put into use with canister against the enemy. Thanks to their efforts, we have enough powder to make more rockets and some hand grenades. Speaking of grenades, they would have come in handy.
They sent a second wave against us and we killed that off too. Not much to peak of there, just more carnage and slaughter. Didn't lose any men during it.
By that time the sun was starting to come down and the Union boys were going to beseige our position for a while, probably because of the futility of full on attacks.
Or so we thought. What they were setting us up for was a flanking movement from their reinforcements. They hit us and did so hard. More arty, which of this time did some serious damage to our position. One of our fortified buildings was knocked out of commission and we lost another man when it fell.
I had managed to some men about to get behind one of our LMG emplacements in the dark that night. So far, those are my only kills of the war.
The battle raged on through most of the night, til they called it quits. I'm glad they did, as fighting for hours on end sucks in a big way. We set up a rotating watch and the rest of us went to sleep.
I'm reminded of another song from my time. Part of it went "whistles, shouts and more gunfire, lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire, battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb". Except for the mass amount of burning bodies we had, that fits very well.
*quick commentary: the smell of burning bodies is awful, absolutely rank*
We only got a few hours of sleep before they decided, against common sense, to attack us again. This went on for hours and was starting to really irk the boys. My men want some fucking sleep and I was getting pissed.
Our superior weapons really shined in this kind of fighting. While they only had one shot, our men had 40 9mm rounds per mag in a C-61 or 20 7.62mm ones from their rifles. In city fighting, having only one shot means you will end up very dead, very quick.
The next few days blended together. They were sitting out there and more troops were pouring in. I guess they took such an act as taking the capitol as a major insult, hehe.
Just this morning, we went on the offensive against what was left of them. We were running low on ammo(well, lower than I'd like, we brought a lot) and just wanted this done. We lost the other two men during our assault. Not to enemy fire, but when an RPG round misfired and blew up right out of the tube. One of the men lost his head and most of the rest of his upper body, the other died from a punctured lung. The shrapnel from it accounts for most of our wounded.
We tore through them like a plate of bran muffins with prunes though an old lady. We scored a lot of powder and another two cannon as well as capturing several soldiers and a few officers.
Lincoln remained bound and gagged in the Oval Office during the whole thing. I saw to it that he was fed and given water enough to stay alive, because he's no good to us dead.
One of our FO's saw friendly troops marching on our location. Just like them to come after the battle. Maybe they can help us clean this mess up. Maybe they brought chow too.
DC is being rebuilt and cleaned up, to avoid the hit to morale that seeing the dead brings. And also to help with the smell. The smell of burning bodies is bad enough, but rotting ones is too much.
